OTHER STUFF

Jersey Woolies are truly “interwoven” in Kitty’s life.  She harvests the wool and spins it up. And then knits it up into fantastically warm, cozy, fuzzy hats, mittens and scarves that she offers for sale or gives away as gifts.  She prefers to use the natural colors in all the varieties she raises but some folks just insist on having pink fuzzy hats. Basically there are only 3 “colors” of wooly wool; white, beige and gray.  It doesn’t matter if the animal is a Siamese Sable or a Tort, the yarn will actually be a shade of beige.  Isn’t that odd?  Therefore mostly all of the white wool is saved to dye.

Bel Aire Farm isn’t a certified organic operation but does practice sustainable agriculture.  One of the operations is a production flower bed for cut flowers for market but expressly for growing plants to use for natural dyes.  Kitty feels that it is pretty much a sin to use store bought commercial packets of dye on all of that lovely soft yarn when there are so many plants and flowers out there that make gorgeous colors that Nature provides.  And yep, you can get a pink color and a blue one and all shades of yellows, rusts and browns and even muted celery green too.

Lots of times at a show if she isn’t judging you can find Kitty sitting at her spinning wheel.  She’ll let you give it a go if you ask.
